LANDSCAPE DRAWING KAREN KUCHARSKI
Drawing with Graphite
GAYLORD ROAD VIEW, 26x19 inches One of my signature bodies of work is the graphite drawings. It is a foundation I continue. A graphite stick is a piece of lead, such as a pencil but without the wood casing. The graphite leaves a trail of malleable lustre, and is ideal for artistic interpretation. Like a pencil, the graphite comes in a range of hardness and softness, which allows for either a subtle or striking effect. Because the sticks and pencils are essentially the same material, they blend easily as I shape the edges and spaces into the desired refinement for each piece. Another of my valuable tools is the eraser, which is equally as important as the graphite itself. Together, they make a trusted team. The push and pull of my mark-making becomes a dance towards the cohesive whole. Some drawings have ivory tones, and drawing subtleties not easily reproduced online. |
